Athens Day 3 - The Acropolis

Started our day early with the intention to beat the crowd at the Acropolis (Opening hours: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM).
One of the archaeological sites that we passed along the way.
Great views of the city from the Acropolis. On the right, the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus - the patch of flat area, and above it behind the hill, the Olympic Stadium.

We were not the only ones starting early that day.
But still early enough to feel like we had the place to ourselves...for 10 minutes, maybe.

The Parthenon: We finally meet! Too bad about the scaffolding.
The Erecthion, where the goddess Athena defeated Poseidon and had the city named after her. Girl power yeah!

After a few (very warm hours) at the Acropolis, we made our way back down to the streets of Athens in search of Pies!

From our research the recommended pie shop was Ariston on Voulis Street not far from Syntagma Square. The pies from Ariston were just OK, leaving me quite disappointed, being a huge pie fan and all. But thank goodness we stumbled upon this little bakery not far from the street with the hanging lamp shades.

Really good pies!
Hubby approves! Really. Good. Spanakopita!
Time to leave Athens for Santorini after 3 wonderful days in the city! Maybe we'll be back one day... or maybe we won't, but we sure had a great time here!
